Thanksgiving Day Traditions

17th Nov 2016

Thanksgiving is one of my family’s favorite holidays as we love enjoying a delicious turkey dinner and getting to spend quality time together as a family. We love how the holiday brings people closer together and reminds us of all the things we have to be grateful for. Another fun thing about Thanksgiving is getting to create some memorable traditions! There are so many creative things you can do that will have your family looking forward to the holiday each year. Here are some ideas for creating your own Thanksgiving day tradition.

1. Parade watching

Waking up early to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on TV is a great way to start the day! It’s so much fun to look at all those big balloons and marching bands, dancers, singers, and even catching an early glimpse of Santa Claus!

2. Football game

For many families, it’s a big tradition to play a game of football before or after dinner. This all-American tradition started way, way back with the Detroit Lions playing the first Thanksgiving football game in 1934!

3. Wishbone

This tradition starts at the dinner table where two people grab hold of the turkey’s wishbone and make a wish. They then pull on the bone until it snaps in two and whoever is holding the longer piece of bone gets their wish granted!

4. Thanksgiving tree

This is a fun arts and crafts project the whole family can work on together. First you cut out a tree from construction paper or cardboard. Then you cut out paper leaves and each family member writes down something they are thankful for on each leaf. The leaves then get glued onto the Thanksgiving tree. You can hang up the tree in your living room or dining room and each time you pass it, you are reminded of everything your family has to be thankful for.

5. Go for a walk

Taking a nice walk together as a family is a good way to end the day and work off some of those calories you just consumed! It’s nice to see all the leaves changing and seeing decorations put up around the neighborhood. You can also bring along some cider or hot chocolate to keep warm on your walk and save some dessert for when you get back!

6. Volunteer

Some families make it their tradition to spend Thanksgiving day feeding others who are in need. They volunteer at soup kitchens and other organizations where they help cook or serve the homeless. It’s a great way to give back and also serves as a reminder that we should be so grateful for always having food to eat and a warm place to live.

infant support pillow

Written by Alicia Overby - Founder & President of Baby Elephant Ears

Alicia is wife, mother, and creator of Baby Elephant Ears. Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. In 2005, when their second child was an infant, he cried all the time and just couldn't seem to get comfortable.

After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine, they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where their baby was successfully treated for asubluxation, discomfort most likely the result of the strain during labor, which was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. Only proper neck, head, and back alignment would offer him relief. When they couldn't find a product to give their baby the necessary support, Alicia took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!
