What to Pack for a Trip to the Beach with Baby

What to Pack for a Trip to the Beach with BabyIt’s nearly summer! Many of us are planning beach trips. If you have a baby, that means you have to be extra prepared (what else is new, right?). Here are some things you should make sure to pack.

1. A stroller – Do NOT forget this. You won’t want to carry your baby everywhere and your baby won’t want to be carried. Give them a nice space for a water cup or toys.

2. A wrap – Even if you bring the stroller, it won’t get you everywhere. It’s hard to walk around stores or through sandy beaches. Bring a wrap or baby carrier to wear on your baby for times when the stroller is too bulky.

3. Extra clothes – At the beach, naturally, you’ll get wet and sandy, but babies do not have much tolerance for that. Don’t be afraid to change clothes a few times even if they don’t make a mess. You never know where irritable sand is hiding.

4. A sturdy blanket – Don’t bring a comforter, but you need a blanket that acts as a good barrier between you and the sand so your baby has a comfortable spot to play. Towels are not good enough.

5. A sun hat – Even if you’re covering your baby in sunscreen, a wide brim hat is essential to keep the sun off the delicate skin of the face. It also provides shade that follows your baby and helps prevent dehydrations.

6. A big umbrella – This might actually be easier to rent for the day than lug one around, but you’ll want a nice big umbrella over your blanket so there’s plenty of shade for your kids to return to.

7. A baby seat – If your little one is too small to sit by themselves, you’ll want a comfortable place for your baby to relax without sitting in your arms all day. Make sure to position the seat beneath an umbrella.

8. Plenty of toys – At some point you’ll insist your little one sit in the shade and drink water. You’ll need toys to distract him/her, otherwise they’ll be too excited to run/crawl around in the sun and play.

9. A baby monitor – If you’re staying at a hotel or resort, you’ll probably take your baby to the room for the nap. Instead of one person hanging in the room waiting, use a baby monitor so no one’s fun is interrupted.

10. An SPF shirt – An SPF shirt is a special kind of swim shirt that blocks the sun’s rays so you don’t have to constantly put sunscreen on your kids (on the areas the shirt covers). They come in long and short sleeves depending on your preference. They’re breathable, so they won’t get hot.

11. Swim diapers – These prevent your child’s waste from escaping and floating around the water. They are sturdier than regular diapers and don’t disintegrate in the water.

12. Water shoes – Crocs are best for this. These protect your child from the rocks and shells at the bottom of the water.

13. Sunscreen – Of course, don’t forget this. A sun burn early in life drastically increases the chance of skin cancer later on. Slather this on your kids often and immediately after exiting the water.

What else would you bring to the beach for your baby?

Alicia is wife, mother, and creator of Baby Elephant Ears. Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. In 2005, when their second child was an infant, he cried all the time and just couldn't seem to get comfortable.

After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine, they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where their baby was successfully treated for asubluxation, discomfort most likely the result of the strain during labor, which was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. Only proper neck, head, and back alignment would offer him relief. When they couldn't find a product to give their baby the necessary support, Alicia took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!
