11 Tips for Traveling with Your Baby This Holiday Season

Traveling with Your Baby This Holiday SeasonIf you’re like many families, you’ll be traveling somewhere for the holidays this year. Spending a night outside the home with a baby can be problematic. You don’t have all the right items. It’s an unfamiliar place. Who knows what could happen? To make your trip more comfortable, use these tips.

1. Dress for quick diaper changes – Forget the cute outfits with buckles, zippers and snaps. Stick to simple onesie + pants combinations. This way you’ll be able to change a diaper quickly in the car, the airport, or at a restaurant.

2. Stay on home time – If you change time zones, don’t expect your baby to follow suit. Stick to that time zone so you don’t have to adjust and then adjust back.

3. Choose the longer layover – If you’re flying somewhere, don’t try to run from one plan to another. Take some time in between to stretch your legs and get you (and all your stuff) to the next one.

4. Trial run with the travel bed – If you’re going to have your baby sleep in something new (like a travel bed or crib), have him/her sleep in it a few times before the trip so it feels familiar.

5. Take turns with your partner – Don’t let one person miss the vacation because they have to give the baby a feeding or a nap. Make sure to take turns with your partner.

6. Pack some new toys – Pick up a few cheap toys and hide them in your bag until the time of the trip. When your child starts to get fussy, pull out the toys for a quick distraction.

7. Meet needs right away – You can preempt crankiness by making sure to meet your child’s needs before they become a big deal. That means offering a feeding before the usual time.

8. Plan around naps – Try to schedule long car rides or flights during nap times so your baby sleeps through the uncomfortable parts.

9. Go with low-maintenance snacks – Pack snacks that can easily be eaten on the go, like diced fruit and vegetables, crackers, pretzels, etc.

10. Bring a blanket or mat – Who knows where you’ll have to sit down for a moment when you’re traveling? Bring a blanket or play mat so your child has somewhere safe and clean to play.

11. Relax! – You’re on vacation! Don’t stress about too much. Even if your child isn’t enjoying the trip, try to make the most out of it.

infant support pillow

Written by Alicia Overby - Founder & President of Baby Elephant Ears

Alicia is wife, mother, and creator of Baby Elephant Ears. Baby Elephant Ears was created out of parental concern, not financial desire. In 2005, when their second child was an infant, he cried all the time and just couldn't seem to get comfortable.

After seeking advice and suggestion from the medical community and alternative medicine, they eventually ended up in the chiropractors office where their baby was successfully treated for asubluxation, discomfort most likely the result of the strain during labor, which was now being exacerbated by the normal lack of infant neck strength. Only proper neck, head, and back alignment would offer him relief. When they couldn't find a product to give their baby the necessary support, Alicia took matters into her own hands and crafted her own infant support pillow. The first Baby Elephant Ears was born!
